We really do live in a sandciety, huh.
I feel like I missed a lot of the subtext since parts of this are rooted in Japanese social mores that I only vaguely understand, but it’s still an affecting book. A good read if you want to feel claustrophobic and depressed at the same time.

ehhh first half was definitely better than the middle but whatever. ending was okay too but the middle section kinda ruined the 5 stars for me. enjoyed the deeper reading of this though the lectures definitely helped my understanding of the content plus provided lots of context to themes in the book

"La donna di sabbia" non per nulla è una delle opere più importanti di Abe Kobo. In essa emergono tutti i temi più cari all'autore, dal distopico al dilemma sull'identità. E questo romanzo discute proprio la ricerca dell'identità, seguendo uno studioso che, nella sua ricerca di insetti, finisce per essere fatto prigioniero in un villaggio di mare, dove insieme alla donna con cui convive, deve spalare sabbia tutto il giorno affinché il fosso in cui hanno la loro casa non venga ricoperto di sabbia. Scrittura scorrevole e di facile lettura.
