Not a nice time!! Left reading this frustrated and spinning, which ultimately reflected what Kōbō Abe wrote. Almost like a claustrophobic play once inside the dunes.

I thought it was a pretty funny and interesting concept. Definitely different than any other story I'd read before. There were parts of the book that I did not enjoy or understand very well, but overall I feel the book deserves the status as a classic and was super interesting speculative, horror-adjacent fiction.
Found the concept really interesting and enjoyed the nihilistic overtones, but man some of the sections left me bored out of my mind.
L'avevo già letto per un esame dell'università e non mi era piaciuto molto, forse perché costretta a leggerlo e quando sono costretta a leggere qualcosa di solito non mi piace per principio. Questa volta invece l'ho apprezzato molto di più, nonostante ci siano ancora dei punti che mi irritano abbastanza. Ok, non sono brava con le review, quindi dico solo che sì, è angosciante - non ai livelli di 1984, ma comunque. Si percepisce il peso della sabbia che invade il villaggio, mi sentivo quasi soffocare, in alcuni momenti, come se mi trovassi lì con Niki Junpei. Quando lui corre, tu corri insieme a lui. Stai fuggendo insieme a lui. Riguardo il finale, io avevo dato un'interpretazione diversa da quella che ho letto in alcuni saggi riguardanti il libro, che se da un lato sono rassicuranti, dall'altro non mi soddisfano molto. Non dico nulla di più per non rovinare nulla. Anche qui, leggetelo. Leggete quanto più possibile di Abe Kōbō perché è davvero geniale.
Thought-provoking philosophical novel exploring themes of existentialism and freedom in a very unique way. I especially liked the recurring motif of the one-way vs. return ticket, which contrasts the desire for freedom with that of stability.
