The main thing to read for is the narration's detachment from anything happening. Because the book opens with us knowing that he's missing, it puts on no airs about there being any hope for him. It's so uninvested in caring about this guy's well-being on any level, and the narrative is all in watching him adjust to that tone. If that makes sense.
