Man goes to desert to collect insects because he is not like other guys and has esoteric interests that a basic bitch like myself just wouldn't understand. Man gets kidnapped and forced to work in sand pits. Man meets woman in their shared house. Everyday, man and woman dig out a never ending amount of sand. Somehow woman is not immediately raped (there is an unsuccessful attempt made towards the end). Man attempts escape. Man gets caught in quicksand. Man is re-captured. Woman's life begins when she becomes pregnant and can now fulfill her duties on this earth; if she had a career, surely she would have sacrificed it for Man, or perhaps a different, better man, perhaps a man who kicks a football for his career. Villagers bring woman to hospital. Man sees another opportunity for escape. Man does not choose it and accepts his fate in sand suburbia, for there is so much history in these streets, and mama's good eats, and wonder on repeat.

interesting story with beautiful and horrifying descriptions of the flooding sand. i’d bet that this book was a heavy reference for wind up bird chronicle. didn’t love perspectives of women/koreans presented. kind of expected from an old japanese book tho lol

A remote seaside town, honeycombed by holes with houses in the bottom. A wonderfully original idea that keeps you interested even if the protagonist is cruel and unlikable. Has the feel of Kafka.
