I'm not much of a romance novel reader (before I started reading Higgins, I think the last romance I read was something by Danielle Steele. In the 80s. When most of the fun stuff was lost on my young eyes.)
With that in mind, I love Higgins' books. This one is a gem.
The protagonist (Callie, short for Calliope-Homer's muse) is adorable, funny and just neurotic enough to float the story. (Who isn't at least a little neurotic when it comes to love?) Her "fatal flaw" is called out (more than once) in this novel, which I loved. (She's a people pleaser to the nth degree.)
The story is heartwarming, funny, devastating (at times), and hard to stop reading. (Hard = impossible, fyi.)
Higgins has an amazing talent at making characters with depth and building a believable world around them.
One teensy problem I had- the Love Interest is so terse, I wasn't 100% on board with the connection.

So I’m not “loving ”Kristan Higgins earlier romances but for some reason I keep going back for more. Her older backlist titles seem to have a lot in common, like similar scenes and set-ups, like heroine goes on a bad date, heroine has a dog, heroine has quirky family, etc. Also I’m starting to see a pattern in the heroine and hero in that the heroine seems to be a doormat when it comes to a former/current “love” or crush in her life and there’s always something questionable about the hero in that I’m never really sure if he truly loves the heroine in the end. With that said, this book had some really great moments and some really funny ones. I loved the relationship between Callie and her grandfather Noah and the interactions with the rest of her family were definitely highlights. Maybe that’s it, I find the family aspects fun to read? Who knows! For some reason I find these books comforting and without a doubt will be selecting another to read off of the backlist.
This is a delightful story that is at times a riot (the laughing out loud in public kind of humor) and at others poignantly sad. Callie makes the most of what life hands her but doesn't take a stand for herself when it comes to the men in her life. When she finally learns she's just fine as is, she manages to get all she ever wanted.
I wasn't expecting this book to be so cleverly written and with such humor. Callie's family and friends provide much comic relief throughout the story, which balances the unfairness surrounding her in her work and love life. Her triumph over a pointless unrequited love for Mark is a journey that you'll find equally as frustrating as the success in the end. Even Ian has his flaws but has the sense to look deeper than what Callie provides on the surface.
This wasn't the light fare I was expecting and it was a delight to read. I highly recommend this book and I plan to read more from this author.

This book is almost perfect-I mean, putting aside the weird Michelle Obama self talk-the only thing I wondered is why Kristian Higgin's seemed to hate Callie's sister so much? In some ways, I felt she was more interesting than the main character-and perhaps deserving of a romance novel of her own.
This book was okay, but it just didn't seem to live up to my expectations. I have now read all of Ms. Higgins' books, and I have to admit, this is the one I liked the least. I think the big part was that I didn't connect with the hero of the novel, which is kind of the point once you read it and see what Ian is like. Callie and her family were hilarious, and I have a special spot in my heart for her grandfather Noah. Her romance witih Ian was wonderful, giving more life and emotion to someone I thought was an otherwise dull character. A good book, worth reading, just not at the top of my 'Reread' list!
I loved this book! Callie and her antics had me laughing in the best of ways, and I love how the author told this story. It was not rushed, it had a fantastic ending, and i simply love Callie and her weird family! One of the main things I enjoy about this author is how they treat the characters—hero, villain, minor—they all get a spot and have their own story. This isn’t to say there is excessive writing on minor characters, but it goes beyond just saying what the character’s story is and shows you who they are and how they relate.
Well, that was a whole lot of fun and happiness and crying and hilarity all wrapped in one book! Callie killed me...she was such a unique character, and she and Ian worked in a weird and adorable way. The secondary cast was also fabulous. And when Callie was pining for Mark, it was in a realistic way where she partially wanted to slap her own self, so I didn't have to be all roll my eyes over her, kwim?? Loved Betty Boop and Michelle Obama...HILARIOUS. And Bowie....well, that right there is a dog and a half. Basically I just thoroughly enjoyed myself with this book....
Oh, I love me some Kristan Higgins! She is such a fantastic author and I gobble up her books in a few days.
This book followed ad exec Callie Grey as she tries to get over the man she's wanted her whole life (and also her boss), Mark. He tells her he's marrying someone else and she actually starts working for their company, knowing nothing about the ad business. During this time, a new vet comes into town, a very shy and quiet guy named Ian. He's very aloof and standoffish but Callie manages to break through his walls. There is so much I can say about this book and how much I loved it. I loved Callie and her sunshiny personality. I loved Ian and his quiet personality. I loved the plot and secondary characters. And I loved how it ended. It wasn't what I expected and a little different than most romance novels.

This book falls into that weird vortext between category romance and chicklit. We don't get to know the characters as well as we might in a full-length romance, but the first-person, chick-lit style narration makes up for some of the lack. I liked Callie, her beaus, and the surrounding cast of characters. I'll be checking out some of Higgins' earlier works.
