As of all Higgins books, they begin slowly, her female characters are unbelievably stupid (and sometimes funny) and make you wanna facepalm yourself into a comma, but if you give it some time, it improves, the heroines aren't that bad anymore, the secondary characters grown on you and you actually find yourself enjoying it.
For a couple of chapters, (as in 100 pages more or less), the heroine Callie, was a pain. Her stupid obsession over a guy that couldn't care less, the whining, the mooning, the PAIN, her inner voices(Michelle Obama & Betty Boop REALLY?!) was a bit too much.
The 1st POV,the over-the-top dramatic reactions, the constant updates of Callie's cloth choices, the self-pat on the back for her great looks, the creepy image of a couple doing it in a coffin (an image i would love to erase from memory) and the i'm-trying-so-hard-to-be-funny humor were off-putting for me.
But i kept reminding myself that this is Higgins and her books didn't disappoint in the past...
And then BAM... the uptight, taciturn male comes in(she can definitely create loveable male characters), the funny, grumpy grandpa, the wacko sister, the cute little brother, the bird incident that cracked me up, the sweet, tender and sad moments that made me cry, the pets that are ever present made me fall in love with it.
Calliope was a pain but YES I ended up liking her a lot. I was amazed by Ian's maturity, manners, and sobriety towards life. Those two were like night and day but they complement each other so completely you get to hate them a bit for it.
The "Get a grip" comment from Ian, in the beginning of the story, made me like him instantly.(I think I made it crystal clear that I loved him! LOL). Apart from those two, the eccentric secondary characters gave life and color to this story and made it enjoyable.
If you are patient enough and willing to ignore the things mentioned above, you may like this book. It's not perfect but give it a try, it's worth it.

So, this book. Couldn't put it down, ignored a few friends to continue it, and stayed up to finish it. And I don't understand why at all.
This is not to say that it is a mystery why anyone would enjoy this book. The characters all hop off the page, the heroine is appropriately soft and hard at the same time, the hero is delightfully beta (despite looking like a Russian assassin), and the dogs are the best thing ever. I had a great time reading this book and would probably read it again on a day in need of a good pick-me-up.
So on second thought I suppose I understand why I bulldozed most of today's priorities for this book after all.

Funny, sweet, and sad. Callie was a bit too upbeat and Ian was hard to get to know, but on a whole I really enjoyed the story.
It seems like it took me forever to actually start this book once I bought it but once I got started I really didn't want to put it down. I do this all the time with Kristan Higgins books. I liked Callie's character, Ian grew on me but I hated Mark and Muriel but since they were the antagonists I'm sure I wasn't supposed to like them. A lot of the first part of this book was centered around embarrassing situations for the heroine but her confidence and sunny disposition moves the reader right past that with a little smile. Did anyone else fall in love with Freddy? I did and I would love love love a book about him! I think I have now read almost all the Kirstan Higgins books and the ones I haven't I will be finding asap to add to my TBR pile.
oh lordy, the tearing up I did while reading this book! I really identify with Callie, and having a husband who is also a trifle uncomfortable with emotions, this really touched me and was near to my heart. wish I had a grampy like Noah, though. sweet romance, no smutty stuff. I want to read it again right now. once again totally in lurve with kristan higgins.
This is the 2nd Kristan Higgins I've read, and while I had some small issues with both books of hers I've read (I don't even know how to describe what my issues are, other than I tend to get annoyed by her heroines), I really enjoyed this. Mostly because of IAN!!! Definitely a top-tier hero. I had wanted to read this book because I was in the mood for a cold-seeming hero slowly opening up as he falls in love and that was exactly what I got here. The development of the romance was perfect.
DNF so won’t rate stars.
The MC’s torch bearing for a guy not worth her time did me in. He barely gave her the time of day after a brief relationship FIVE YEARS prior, many years after her first kiss with him in a Seven Minutes in Heaven game, and who she worked with (for), so saw daily… yeah, no.
It is tragic how many women do this IRL. Fictionalizing it is not entertaining. It’s sad.
The flashbacks to their whirlwind relationship (= few weeks of fucking) was the final nail in my reading coffin.
Pass.

this felt wayy more like a woman’s fiction book than romance. in fact, the love story was 100% outshined by callie’s family—everyone’s journey was way more explored than the main characters’ feelings development. for that reason i guess i couldn’t bring myself to feel their connection to each other.
