Not my first choice, but definitely one of B’s bedtime faves.

All the characters from Little Bear’s birthday party reappear to celebrate owl’s birthday. Emily, a new human companion and her doll join the friends. This book simply doesn’t have the same quiet mystique as other books in the series. I think the addition of a human character takes away from the sense of experiencing Little Bear’s hidden world.

Sendak’s illustrations, as always, are superb.

Just as lovely as when my grandparents used to read it to me as a child. :-)

I loved this story of making a summer friend and being pen pals. Maurice Sendak was the artist and he used 4 colors, black, white, green and brown for. It all works. The story, the art.

Little bear is sweet and kind and precious. I had this warm glow in my chest while reading it and I wanted to read it all over again when I was done. It was a fantastic story. I am a huge fan of these little bear books.

I let my niece read this one and I think she is going to read it. I'll have to update what she thinks of it.

Un libro álbum considerado ya clásico, donde Sendak comenzó a forjar su estilo. Interesante, pero nada del otro mundo.

This picture book, produced three years after the first Little Bear, shows an increase in skill by both Else Holmelund Minarik, the author, and Maurice Sendak, the illustrator. There are more descriptions for children to read this time around, yet the essentials are still simple for early readers. The stories revolve around Little Bear's new friend, Emily, and her doll, Lucy, who is treated by the author as a real person.

Each of the four stories show off Minarik's witty humor while still staying true to the childlike nature of her main character. My favorite in this book is the first story. I found the text playful and warm. I greatly admire Minarik's ability to convey a nuanced story with such an economy of words.

Sendak's work is also outstanding. I found myself very jealous of his competence in capturing the gestures and mannerisms of the individual animals along with Little Bear and Emily in a convincing way. I also noticed how gray washes were utilized more in this book. They enhanced contrast where needed to help the focus stay on the the main characters. His line quality and hatch work were masterful. I also noticed how well he used spot colors—this time brown, gray, black & green—to create a diverse tonality despite the limited palette.

Overall, this was a delightful book. Like [b:The Little Bear|201146|Little Bear|Else Holmelund Minarik|http://images.gr-assets.com/books/1318518124s/201146.jpg|506009], this copy is the original one from my childhood, and a prized treasure in my collection.
