honestly, it's kind of a bittersweet book. i like the commentary on the 'innocence' of childhood and the adolescent experience. holden is pretty flawed since he's a bit shallow at times and he's clearly got... issues, but i did feel for him and what he was going through. his views on the people around him reminded me a bit of me when i was 16 with some mental health issues. i got what he was saying about phoniness too, although it's very held back by his unwillingness to understand others. the part at the end where he said 'god i wish you could've been there to see it' got to me, there's something heathbreaking to that. i came out of the story genuinely wishing that this guy got better after the events of this book.

overall, i really enjoyed this book, and while it's no favorite, i think it'll still stick with me. and even if people are often divided on this book, i'd still recommend this. also now i've gotten into saying goddamn as often as possible because of this goddamn book.

edit 17/5/24: okay. i reread this, and maybe it is a bit of a favorite after all. in retrospect (and having learnt more about why people dislike this book so much), i'm gonna add more on why i like this book.

having experienced similar things to holden, i used to find this book painfully relatable. i find him a very honest depiction of a kid with issues whom few really listen to. against the backdrop of the 50s/60s, where understanding of mental illness is steeped in stereotypes and looked down upon, i kinda see how holden ends up the way he is. nearly everyone misunderstands him, and in return he maintains that child-like, black-and-white view of the world he's coming of age in.

the book explores the fear and uncertainty that comes with adulthood, vs the safe 'simplicity' you experience in childhood. it's easy to fall into the trap of idolizing childhood, as holden kinda does (see: the second-last part with his sister), but there is something dangerous about staying stuck in childhood, in the past, finding it frightening to understand the reality of the 'real world'. and due to a variety of circumstances, holden can't see that. he ends almost the same as he was - stuck in the same mindset that adulthood is something inherently 'cruel'. and still, no one listens to him, and he doesn't listen to anyone (who isn't his younger sister). he reinforces his own view that adulthood's shitty, childhood is wonderful and innocent, and just so happens to have been through awful circumstances that support that view.

tldr: this book gives a very honest, real depiction of a kid with depression. sure, it's not written all that beautifully (although that second-last chapter with his sister is still one of the most gut-wrenching chapters in any book i've ever read), but the message still packs a punch. i like the commentary on the fear of what adulthood brings - but ultimately, i hope he makes peace with growing up. and i hope someone truly does listen to him someday.

Re-lectura.

Unfortunately I do tend to like male manipulator books but I liked this, I think it gets way too much flack for what it is. I know people hate Holden but that kid is so funny. He’s also dealing with a lot of trauma and alienation that he doesn’t know how to process and I really felt for him. I will say that there is a lot of misogyny and homophobia, but I expected that going into it so it didn’t really bring my rating down because it didn’t catch me off guard.
