For this being a book i read for a school research paper i thoroughly enjoyed it. while at times i was a little bored hearing about random people Holden knew and brought up, i think that in retrospect everything made sense. at first i didn’t understand or even like Holden, but that honestly changed by the end of the book, which was super sweet. this book deals a lot with growing up and the difficult/ scary transition between childhood and adulthood and a lot of Holden just trying to find his place in the world. I’d definitely recommend.

I had to force myself to finish this. None of the characters are rather likeable and the plot was not interesting enough to keep me reading. I do not understand the hype around this novel, and it’s no wonder this is the only novel Salinger is really known for if his writing is similar in his other novels.

This novel reflects the period of time in which it was written, meaning that there are scenes of minor racism and homophobia, sometimes even by the main character. There is a depiction of a masculine attracted teaching preying on a student which is rather uncomfortable and it is implied that all gay people are perverted like that.
