People are so dramatic about hating this book because Holden is whiny or pretentious or whatever so I am surprised that I actually like him. He’s just a sad, existential, traumatised kid, he’s a little annoying sometimes sure but also he’s 16 and overall he’s a sweetheart. I wasn’t super interested in the general goings on but I think Salinger did very well writing a sad, aimless teen wandering around doing sad, aimless things. If I’d read this when I was 12-14 I’d probably have really connected with it.

This book is a character study. It focuses on being young and feeling the weight of people expecting you to have everything decided for the future, to know what career path you want to follow, when you might feel as if you know nothing.

I have seen that many people dislike Holden. I agree that he is not someone that I'd like to hang out with but I don't hate him. I don't think I can, since his thoughts and behavior are affected by things he can't control. Firstly, I think he is autistic. Secondly, he found his dead brother's body when he was a kid and has been sexually harassed many times since a very young age. These are very traumatizing experiences for anyone, let alone a child. So that, combined with his autism, I believe explain why he thinks the way he does.

This book was real crazy. It really was.
No but seriously, this book was enjoyable and I think really relatable for people in high school going through mental health issues. The ending was okay. I both liked how open it was and hated how much it left out. I enjoyed the writing style, it was different from what I'm used to and honestly, it was a nice break, especially because I'm just getting out of a reading block, so it was nice to change things up.

the extremely slow pacing of some parts in the book make it a slog to get through, but the catcher in the rye is overall still an intriguing story with lots of memorable and emotionally impactful highlights.

"Certain things they should stay the way they are. You ought to be able to stick them in one of those big glass cases and just leave them alone. I know that's impossible, but it's too bad anyway."

i can see why some people wouldn't like this book, but honestly i think i love it for those same reasons. the catcher in the rye is an angsty coming of age novel about holden caulfield, a teenager struggling with depression & growing up in the 1950s. holden's smart but unable to apply himself, he feels alone and struggles connecting with other people, and he's desperately clinging to his childhood as everything, even he himself, is changing. yeah he's whiny and depressed and lonesome (rip bozo), but who wasn't at 16 lmao
so glad at the reveal that he gets admitted to a mental hospital for a while tho like... you need help kid!
couldn't in good conscience recommend this to just anyone bc i know how much some people hate it lol but it's definitely worth a try imo !!
