I'm doing this new thing and re-reading some "classic" books that I know I've read but I don't really remember all that much, or that I just want to re-read. Books that are at the forefront of bans go immediately to the top of my pile. I really enjoyed this one and I read it VERY quickly. It really resonated with me. That time of life can be challenging for anyone no matter what era you live in. I think this book probably has a lot to say in terms of how mental health has changed over the years, for one thing. In general, the fact that this book is always on ban lists is very funny to me. 75 years ago when things were REALLY oppressive, I guess I could have understood it. But today? Beyond silly. I mean, lets add up the controversies. He says Bastard a lot and Fuck a few times, he's young and horny, there's a tryst with a prostitute that doesn't even involve sex, there's a moment of potentially (likely) homosexual desires that are also age inappropriate, but again, no actual sex. Underage drinking. There's some hilarious Jesus mentions so I guess a little blasphemy. Oh, and it's rebellious in attitude and nature! Can't forget that one. That's probably the thing conservatives hate the most, tbh. I think that covers most of it. I mean, sweet Jesus, I got way more explicit stuff out of a Stephen King book when I was like 10 years old than I did out of this book. It's pretty tame by 2025 standards, is the point. I do find it HIGHLY interesting that this book has been scapegoated in a few prominent shootings however. To me, it's the same thing they said about rap and metal music. An easy thing to blame that doesn't actually have anything at all to do with the real reasons. I digress - this is quite the coming of age tale - a lot unfolds in just a few days time. It's incredibly funny! And I see bits of myself at that age in the main character. Sadness, hopelessness, lack of motivation, a desire to want more, to be bored with people, to be curious about sex and booze and smoking and to be attached to girls for reasons that aren't really valid or realistic. To be caught up in lust or jealousy, you might say. It's a fascinating ready, truly. I think everyone, especially boys, should probably read this book while in high school or college. This was time well spent, going back on this journey. What a book - not many fiction books have this kind of lasting impact on society. Not many books can stay so relevant over so much time passing by. Oh, and last thing, I love where the title comes from and how that weaves itself into the story. Genius, really. This is definitely a classic.

this was such a gut punch of a book omggggg
i was thoroughly enjoying holden’s (seemingly) mindless bitching and moaning about everything he could think of. but as he went off on these tangents and talked to people and got into all these situations the full context of his life and why he is the way he is started clicking into place. it really wasn’t what i was expecting and i cant fathom how people dog on this book anymore. beautiful and painful and also very comedic at a lot of different points

like, even the part about him asking cab drivers about where the ducks go in the winter and their super rude/irritated responses were written as comedic scenes imo but they also still inform the overall theme of this loss of innocence holden explores through the whole book

Still a great read. Had me cracking up throughout and I even cried a little! 

10 years later and I’m still in love with book and catch something new each time.

call me crazy, you don’t get it like it get it 💔
 it’s just about a kid that’s afraid of growing up. Mourning childhood, or nostalgia, is something all of us can’t grief.
I think some of the writing is a bit repetitive and Holden goes on these very long tangents, for good reasons but it goes on for a while. But other than that it was pretty good :) !!
