I have a huge amount of nostalgia for this book. I probably read it 100 times as a kid. Coming at it again as an adult, it's still precious.

(Although we do have to acknowledge the Chinese bear's portrayal was NOT OK. The 50's were wild, y'all.)

I took off half a point for that, but I adore the characters and art and would give it a perfect rating otherwise.

The kiddo and I love these ! Definitely a favorite from our year- these collection of stories were the first he would sit through and pay special attention to!

Mother Tongue notes: Good for beginner readers. Mostly 2-5 letter words, but the story isn’t too simple. 1 chapter can be read by a group in 20 minutes, depending on the reading level.

The first 3 stories don’t need to be read in order, but the 4th story is best read last. It mentions the first 3 stories, and ties them together. This makes for a good review, especially if the stories have been read over several lessons. A good prompt for the students to look back through the book and practice retelling the stories from memory and the illustrations.

This is cute, illustrations and all. Very imaginative and easily readable for a beginner- it doesn't sacrifice story for easy reading.

I loved this book as a child, and now JP does too (and Birthday Soup is our mutual favorite). It is oft-demanded at bedtime.

Easy reader. Four stories of Little Bear and his mother. Good word repetition. Illustrated by Maurice Sendak.

Just as lovely as when my grandparents used to read it to me as a child. :-)
