It was interesting at times! I have to say I don't think that I am the intended audience any longer. I purchased this book in high school, as assigned reading the summer before my AP Psychology class. As I now have a degree in psychology, I think it is a little below my level. It almost felt like a review, a restating of topics in a surface level way, repackaged for non-psychology inclined readers. It was a nice review, but not exactly an enlightening read. I also feel that it leaned a little...vain? Self-absorbed? Especially toward the end.
A quick glance into the nature of the piece of gelatin sitting inside our skulls! Interesting enough, but I might go read a full neuroscience textbook now to continue my learning of the brain!…actually, nah, this book was probably enough.
I had high hopes for this book based on the thoughtful and well-written introduction, but while I did enjoy reaching this, I can't say I was impressed. Several of the "cool" neurology stories I had already read about (probably in The Tale of the Dueling Neurosurgeons), and I kept waiting for something more original to pop up.
I found the strongest and most interesting chapter to be the second, What is Reality?. Eagleman concisely explained how the world we humans experience is simply a result of our own species' evolution - my cat doesn't experience the world in the same way as I do because his cat forefathers had different evolutionary pressures in terms of seeing, smelling, testing, and hearing. I wish the rest of the book has been as strong as this chapter.
This is a solid read, but I think it could have been more.

Holy fuck, this was bloody fascinating. Our brains are so impressive and weird, it’s hard to even capture in words.
I found the information about memory, the way we actually perceive the world, childhood pruning, and our unconsciousness particularly interesting. Honestly, the brain is mind-boggling.
The only thing I found “meh” was some of the tech-bro stuff towards the end, but overall a captivating read.
