Classic Anne Tyler, but it felt like I'd read it before. Ironically, this is one of her first big books, but I've read enough of her later ones to make this one seem a bit redundant.

Deeply in my Anne Tyler era and adoring every minute
This is a lovely, quiet novel which follows one man’s journey to learn how to be happier, less anxious and more trusting of other people. Macon at the start is comic and pitiful. His character development is very well described, one small change at a time.
Not a book I would have picked on my own, but the local library is doing a book/Oscar-winning movie book club. I found it slow to start, but enjoyed it much more in the second half.
Nearly 40 years since The Accidental Tourist was published and it holds up. Can't believe it took me so long to read Anne Tyler, and this book in particular, but apparently now was the perfect time. Incredible writing, clearly drawn characters with distinct quirks and flaws, and thoughtful insights into grief and loss. I have found another favorite novel.

I enjoyed reading this. I liked the characterisation. Not sure how I felt about the ending
Vaguely charming but fizzled for me at the end. I did cry in the airport but that’s actually not too difficult to achieve. (Sidenote: the sole of my boot is falling off and it’s fucking me off so I’m not feeling particularly generous)
