how did i expect courtney summers to write a single book that doesn’t have me sobbing like a baby…?

sadie is the definition of female rage and i love her for it
and i hope she’s okay and she probably isn’t and, goodness, i can’t start crying again.

Viscerally disturbing, horrifying and sad. Very impactful. The original ending, while lacking closure, is real and raw and doesn’t bother me. The epilogue, however, feels wholly unnecessary and a step too far down the hole of no hope. MAJOR trigger warnings.

It’s a dark, heartbreaking book with twists I didn’t see coming. I loved the switches from Sadie’s POV to the podcast with West! It’s a unique concept for a novel, which made it even more interesting to read. It took some time to get into the story as the first half was a bit slower and more detailed, especially from Sadie’s chapters. By the second half I flew through the pages, not wanting to put it down.

I think the ending was perfect for this type of story. The pacing overall was also fairly well done, with nothing being rushed or dragged out! There’s a lot of characters so although we only get to really know a few of them, the side characters are still well written. We get enough of a description to picture them but most of them we only get passing glimpses rather than any depth as we take the journey with Sadie. I know I’m going to be thinking about this one for a long time!

this was so damn powerful, and I had no idea how much it’d hit me. it’s hardship, it’s love, it’s hurt, it’s love wrapped around hurt and hurt wrapped around love. it’s what a lot of these “mysterious” and “plot twist-y” books can’t, for the life of them, grasp onto. it’s what they always forget to highlight. with the twists and turns, with the “ooooh, what happens next?” there should always be a sadie. and thats not to say it’s something authors don’t try to accomplish, I can appreciate the efforts, but its so easy to tell when the story is made around the character, aka sadie, vs when the character is made around the story. even if the plot was born first, courtney summers made it so sadie was prioritized first. this wasn’t a book about a crime, a murder, about finding answers. it has that, well, most of that, sure, but it’s not about that; it’s about way more. it was an honor to cry at work while finishing it, knowing I had read something that hit me right where it was meant to hit

Dark themes but not graphic in descriptions. I wish it was a longer book with more description.

I miss sadie :(

‘I don't expect it to bring her back. It won't bring her back. It's not about finding peace. There will never be peace.BI'm not under any illusion about how little of me will be left after I do this one thing.’

‘A world at the end of the world.’

‘I don’t want him to do what he's doing, talking to me like I'm some wild thing, like I can be calmed down with the gentleness he's dressed his voice in.’

‘"It'll h-heal f-fine."It'll heal ugly.” Most things do’
