I was torn with the rating - I guess I would have preferred to read the theoretical parts (the financial details of an alternative now) as a stand alone book without all the cheap, dragged on sci fi, which sort of had potential but mostly disappointed.
I was however impressed with the author's ability to predict and answer question at every step.

DID NOT FINISH

I thought this was a sci fi book but in fact it was very heavy in politics which is not my cup of tea. I couldn’t bring myself to finish this book.

DNF at page 56 (24%). Incredibly boring. It's a fantasy about economics told in vague terms with barely any character involvement.

A challenging book to imagine a different way society could be organized. A true antithesis to "there is no alternative". Many inspiring and enlightening ideas, which was what I expected going in the book. The fictional device that the author used to convey his thoughts fluctuated in efficiency. Having read his non-fiction, i have no doubt that he would have been able to present the ideas without the fictional aspect. By the end of the book, the focus seems to be lost a bit in the effort to make the fictional world believable, and I feel at that point the author may have diverted from the original goal by spending time exploring the technicalities of communicating with a parallel universe. But the overall experience of the book is positive. It offers a lot of food for thought, and a sense of hopefulness as well
