Bad start. the characters do not make any meaningful impressions, in fact, I actually disliked the way they behaved and spoke to others. Putting two unlikable characters together did not work for me. The magic stuff is strange, confusing, and distracting. The professors are interrupted every other page by something exploding, kind of annoying.

Another adventurous and a touch ridiculous book at times with the things they encounter. Thoroughly enjoyable though and India Holton definitely has a distinctive way of writing.

Elodie and Gabriel were polar opposites but it did feel like they needed someone who is the opposite of themselves. I enjoyed Elodie, she was a free spirit and very authentically herself. She was also intelligent and quick witted but also very real. Gabriel was stoic and serious but underneath deeply caring, which I don't think we would've known as reader if we didn't get to see things from his point of view at times. The way he thought of Elodie was funny and lovely.

The one major flaw to this whole story, which thankfully the story acknowledges itself, is that their whole relationship could have been fixed by one good, open conversation between the two of them. Instead, their own insecurities and inability to read the other very well caused them to be apart for no bloody reason.

I enjoyed the Welsh setting and the combination of a real, historical based setting with the magic built into it so it felt reasonable and normal. Really enjoyable.
