Just as cute as the first one and I didn't even gripe about our first lovebirds at all! Utterly swept away by the characters Elodie and Gabriel, and couldn't even be mad at the miscommunication slow-burn that ordinarily would have me throwing things around in frustration. I must read the next one.
Oxford's other woman professor, Elodie Tarrant from the geography department, is summoned to visit a countryside village when an emerging thaumaturgical disaster threatens to cause a cascade of magic that could devastate villages on the path to Oxford, and onwards to London. It's of the utmost importance she go in, identify the source of the disaster, and take any and all necessary steps to stop or delay it until back-up arrives for the safety of the British citizens. What she didn't count on is the telegram summoning her was actually meant to summon her estranged husband, the quiet and bookish Professor Gabriel Tarrant. He hates her guts after she misspoke two days after their marriage of convenience a year ago, and she hasn't been able to face him since. How is she expected to do her job with someone she can't even look in the eye?
What Elodie doesn't realize is that Gabriel is besotted with her. So besotted, the only way he can keep his mental faculties functioning is with brusque logic and his infamous scrupulous vocabulary. Seeing his estranged and beautiful wife meeting him at the platform to this disaster, Gabriel doesn't know what to think besides that he might go to hell for how distracted he is by his wife.
Miscommunication marriage of convenience can't get any cuter than this. The metaphors for their lovesickness are hilarious, and poetic, and romantic. Get yourself a nerd like Gabriel, ladies.

Maybe I was missing the first book? I don’t know. Too fantastical for me at the moment.
