This book is very triggering, but it makes you truly think about some of the privileges that you may have had in life versus what some have had to deal with. As a victim of SA, MA, and EA, this book was far from what I expected.

Purple Hibiscus is a heart wrenching yet oddly comforting read. The story revolves around the life of 16 year old Kambili and her family. Her father Eugene is a highly respected man in their town but none the less , is an emotional tyrant who continuously abuses his kids and wife. The plot thickens when Kambili and her older brother Jaja visit their aunt Ifeoma for their vacation.
This book talks about topics like child abuse , Physical violence and miscarriage, to name a few so if I were you, I would read the trigger warnings.
With an unstable political climate simmering in the background , I feel that this book has been able to sense the pulse of post colonial Nigeria.
The author has succeeded in expressing her views on female autonomy , political unstabilty , young love and abusive parent-child relationship, to name a few. It's a thought provoking read and I'd highly recommend this to anyone who's looking for a quick yet engaging book.

Absolutely gorgeous in every single way, and an extremely welcome, though unfortunately very late, introduction to contemporary African literature.

A compelling book providing perspectives from Nigeria that I had never read before. I found the book to be both insightful and informative.
