I had to read this book for a summer reading assignment and, as I usually don’t like the books I read for school, I wasn’t expecting to like this book either. It’s started off a little slow for the first few chapters but then it picked up and I could not put it down. I absolutely love this book and I cant exactly explain why but the writing is so beautiful, the narrative is so intriguing, and the overall story just pulls you in so much so that you forget you’re reading. I annotated this book like crazy because I just had so much to say and so many things I wanted to underline.

To sum up, I definitely recommend to anyone 14+. This is an amazing, AMAZING novel so don’t hesitant to read it!

I read this book a while ago and so this review will be the imprints of the book that have been left on me, rather than an in-depth review.

Adichie's writing was hard to get into and made getting into the plot quite hard. As someone who was a slow-reader at this point (I have certainly got quicker through the year), I definitely found it hard to read and it took me a while to get through.

The book was also dealing with some very heavy themes and looked at the way that Kambili interacts with them as a child. I think it is interesting the way that Adichie portrays Kambili's thoughts on the occurrences and she knows that they are wrong, but her agency as a young teen is minimised significantly, and so it is interesting to see how Kambili lives and copes with the trauma.

I probably wouldn't read this again although enjoyed some parts of the novel and there was a small plot twist at the end which was good. If you like something that is a bit mundane and at a slower-pace, with darker elements in, then this would definitely be for you.

This book looks at important and heavy topics in a sensitive and complex way. I loved the main character and her brother very much.
