I loved this adaptation! I'm a fan of Grimly's artistic style anyway, and I love the look he chose for this. Vaguely steampunk Gothic really works with a story of mad science.

I also love the mostly wordless black and white panels in the section where the Creature is telling his story.

- Awesome! Loved this!

- The letters are lovely eyed candy, but they are a bit hard to read, so I skipped over a few of them. I don't think I missed much. I read the important letters.

- The artwork is fantastic! The style fits the story so well. It reminds me of Tim Burton, but it is still unique and a style all its own.

- Frankenstein is a creepy story, but adding these haunting illustrations just adds to the creepy, and I loved it!

- I really liked that the text is straight from the original story.

- This is the most unique graphic novel I've read!

- I want more from Gris Grimly!

I have many trepidations regarding this book, but they all have to do with pure personal taste. I know that many will appreciate the Time Burton/Jhonen Vasquez-eque style of the art, appreciate the nod to the gothic horror classic's hand in creating the current gothic aesthetic. While I certainly appreciate that parallel, the grotesque style of the art as well as the inconsistencies in character design irked me. The author's choice to make certain moments illustration-only worked beautifully in some moments and was a huge detriment to the story in others. Much of the creature's personal story was told in illustration, which I appreciate from a storytelling standpoint, since the creature could not use language during much of his story, but I found myself very much missing the eloquent voice with which the monster told his story in the original book. In fact, overall, this graphic novel truly made me understand just how attached I am to the actual prose in Mary Shelley's classic masterpiece. While I didn't end up loving this version, I would absolutely recommend it to any fan of the original work, especially those who are also fans of modern Gothic aesthetic.

A profound waste of time greatly marred by the sheer 'grandiose' conjecture that the 'author' attempts to portray to his readers. I can't believe I thought it'd be much cooler than what I read, because it was in a 'graphic novel' format....ugh...

At first I thought this was simply an illustrated novel, not really a graphic novel, in that it was seemingly just illustrations next to the text. But in the second section, he uses the medium very effectively to convey the creature's growth.

His illustrations are superb, and incorporate their own allusions to the modern world, set beside the somewhat archaic text of Shelley. Overall, a really outstanding book that has made me go back to the original in order to revisit what I first read many years ago.

(Update after re-reading the original novel: Grimly did an outstanding job of selecting what to include in this book, and what to leave out.)

Not accessible on digital with the brown ink on yellowed paper in old school calligraphy. Couldn't read a thing.
