I don't think I understood this book to a full extent, but I really liked it nevertheless. It reminds me of One Hundred Years of Solitude, in terms of the setting and the overall feeling of being isolated from the whole word. I found the plot really interesting and the writing style quite poetic. Can't wait to read other books by Orchan Pamuk.

Sunay Zaim's plays and Serdar Bey's newspapers were the highlights.

Besides the story, which is pretty good, there's lots of interesting issues brought up that are current in Turkey right now. Also, there is poetry.

The story is very well written but very slow to evolve.  I am a quarter of the way through and there is nothing that has engaged me to compel or even persuade me to read further.  It is quite possible that the brilliant narration by John Lee is what even brought me this far.
