First half of the book was exciting and interesting. World building and character building kept me fascinated. Second half of the book, however, felt rushed and mismatched. The climax of the ending lacked substance, and I did not feel that the characters had really developed in any way aside from being vehicles.
I struggled throughout the book with some of the descriptions. The author would go in detail for an entire paragraph or two, but skirted around the subject. I would read the paragraph again and again, but I still did not understand what actually happened or what the purpose was.

Mmmh overall I liked this, but it really is 500 pages of terrible things happening to some very realistically terrible and complicated people. A lot of mysteries are introduced and then never hinted at again. No hidden library, barely a hint of the history of the gods- we never even heard the full rain poem that became the tagline of the rebellion?
It's a compelling read and well written, complex, but damn if it wasn't wholly unsatisfying in a way that is too much even for a book 1.

Heard this was a sci-fi with a butch main character. Turned out to be a political fantasy (& light on the fantasy elements after getting 4 hours in). Life's too short to force myself to finish reading books I'm not into.
