This is one of the most difficult books I have ever had to review. Mainly because having finished it I still don’t know whether I liked it or not. The book is written by Judy Finnigan and has won several good reviews from the professionals. Having read some reviews on websites though it was clear that many people didn’t like the book. For this reason I started to read with in-trepidation.

The writing is easy to follow and written in an easy manner that makes the book a quick read. There were several connections to the author’s own life mainly the death of a friend and the surrounding countryside of Cornwall. Some of the aspects of grief were described very well especially as like the author I have been through a similar experience to the main character in the book. The area of Cornwall is evident throughout the book but could in places do with more descriptive writing.

The main characters in the book are on whole not that likable, the main character at times comes across as weak. Having said this the lack of strong characters does not affect the enjoyment of the story. On a whole I enjoyed the story and the conclusion to the book was good especially with a twist at the end. At times throughout the book I did want to scream well get on with it will you. Having said all this on reflection I think the book is worthy of the 3 stars out of 5 and will not deter me from reading more offerings from this author.

This had the potential to be better than it was as there were some good ideas and the atmospheric setting could have been chilling. Unfortunately much of the descriptive writing was derivative and the characters jumped between extreme emotions in such short spaces of time that it seemed like a cheap melodrama. Similarly the dialogue was often contrived. I was hoping for a twist at the end but found it disappointingly predictable.

Absolutely dreadful! Weak storyline badly written - sorry folks, sorry Judy Finnegan - stick to the day job!

This is a three and a half star book for me, so nearly a four. I enjoyed reading it and it really gripped me for two-thirds of the book. The ending was a twist that I didn't expect but (although I usually hate ghost stories) I wish it had kept with the supernatural theme a bit more. It was a well written, interesting book though which was very easy to read so I would recommend it!

I am a big fan of the Richard and Judy bookclub, so I was intrigued when it was announced that Judy was bringing out her first novel. It was generally an easy to read, good story with a great plot. A few of the characters irritated me however, although I would still recommend it to fans of the genre.

Didn’t enjoy this as much as her second one, which I gave three stars to. Persisted to the end and wished it had a different less predictable ending. Speed read a lot of the descriptions and got a bit irritated with some of the characters especially MC Cathy’s husband Chris. Didn’t engage with this at all. Sorry JF.
