I really loved this book. It was funny. The observations about life and grief were really spot on, and the story really came together at the end, making it a surprisingly satisfying read.
The second person narrative worked well with this, and really made me feel a connection with the character. It is drink and drug fuelled chaos, but offers a real insight into life and death. I cried at the end.

Last 2 chapters SO GOOD, they make you reflect on your judgements and opinions, and think about the rest of your life too.
I did NOT expect this book to make me sad in the way that it did. I think it will not even harder on a second read, and will make me sad throughout

I thought this was a really fine novel. He was 29 when he wrote this and it was his first book. Short but full of absolutely cracking lines and surprising amount of pathos. And the ending? Perfect.

An interesting book with hints of F. Scott Fitzgerald and Bret Easton Ellis in that its protagonist is self-destructive and navigating life by numbing himself with substance abuse. The second person narration was a wonderful style choice. It's a short, quick, but thought provoking read!

«The girl with the shaved head has a scar tattooed on her scalp. It looks like a long, sutured gash. You tell her it is very realistic. She takes this as a compliment and thanks you. You meant as opposed to romantic. “I could use one of those right over my heart,” you say.»
«At the subway station you wait fifteen minutes on the platform for a train. Finally a local, enervated by graffiti, shuffles into the station. You get a seat and hoist a copy of the New York Post. The Post is the most shameful of your several addictions. You hate to support this kind of trash with your thirty cents, but you are a secret fan of Killer Bees, Hero Cops, Sex Fiends, Lottery Winners, Teenage Terrorists, Liz Taylor, Tough Tots, Sicko Creeps, Living Nightmares, Life on Other Planets, Spontaneous Human Combustion, Miracle Diets and Coma Babies.»
