If you are looking for really scary stories, this is not for you. I hate seeing so many low-starred reviews just because people were looking for something unreasonable to look for in a Victorian story. Get a grip, people! If you want scary, read The Shining. This is not going to be scary, and this is not why it was written. What these stories are.. They are musings on something nostalgic, on something mysterious, on something cozy and a little eerie, that makes you wonder about things. That was what Victorian ghost stories were about. They are slow, and what's the most interesting thing - they are stories that you could hear told for real. Some of these stories were literally something you would imagine your friend telling, in the manner of "my cousin once had a cousin, who..."... What I liked the most about these ghost stories was that they were so realistic.
None of these will scare you, but at least two of them will be really really sad (although you'll probably find most of them sad), and at least one of them will have an unexpectedly pleasant ending. Enjoy.
