Described in the blurb as “a nostalgic treat for fans of the gentler brand of interwar fiction”, which feels a fairly barbed comment. If the same story of a 50yr imperfect marriage and family life were being written today, the book would be at least 3 times as long and everything much more fleshed-out. So it is rather a slight book in terms of plot and character development but I enjoyed it anyway. I think because fundamentally it is honest about complex relationships and ultimately hopeful.
