First time reading James Baldwin. I planned to only tackling this particular story in the “Baldwin Anthology” I borrowed from the library. Safe to say I will now be reading the rest. Phenomenal.

I am floored. Absolutely beautiful and heartbreaking writing. I need to read more Baldwin.

more like 3.5 but i didn’t want to mark it as 3 because it felt too low. i was so so excited to read this because james baldwin just has such a way with words. the writing in this was absolutely gorgeous and i underlined lots of lines, but as for the actual plot and characters i just didn’t feel connected to them at all. david was absolutely horrible and i think that was the point? but i just couldn’t get past that and it made it difficult for me to feel any connection at all between giovanni and david (which again, i think maybe was the point). i still love you james baldwin
