A dense, rich, tripartite tome
Vocab. and literary excellence+++
Themes of fear, loneliness, abandonment, class, desperation, familial legacy, and dystopian realities in a totalitarian controlled state (fascist regime seeking total control over life and death 👀)
Skepticism becomes fuzzy paranoia; critique collapses into conspiracy 🚨
Mystery with a threatening bite

A strange, highly engaging novel, in which, with a prestidigitator's skill, the author exploits many of the modes of speculative fiction. It starts with the uchrony of the first part, set immediately after the American War of Secession, from which two confederations of states emerge: the rich northern states, extremely classist but in which certain personal freedoms are safeguarded (such as same-sex marriage, central to the events). The second part takes place at the time of the beginning of the HIV epidemic and features the last descendant of one of Hawaii's dynastic families who, in order to escape his father's madness and follow his own nature, emigrates to the United States to become the toy boy of a rich lawyer. The third part is entirely dystopian and takes place in a future shaped by epidemics, in which the United States has become an authoritarian state that completely controls the lives of its citizens, to the point of sterilising those who dare raise a voice in protest. Three parts that feature characters with the same name, leaving the reader to speculate what the real links are, personal and temporal, and recurring places, fixed points in the narrative, whose evolution is always interrupted just a step away from paradise.

4.5/5

I wasn't expecting to like this book that much, but I did. It took me a few pages to get into it and to understand what the book was about. But once I got it, I was hooked and could not put [b:To Paradise|57739876|To Paradise|Hanya Yanagihara|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1628100349l/57739876._SY75_.jpg|90439453] down.

It's so well written and making you feel so many emotions. It's touching, thrilling and weird in a great way. I now want to read more from [a:Hanya Yanagihara|6571447|Hanya Yanagihara|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1421881815p2/6571447.jpg]. She's so talented, I want more.

And I mixed read the ebook and audiobook, and found that the narrators were amazing.

Since it's a spoiler free review, so I can't really explain why it's not a 5-star. But all I'm going to say is, it's because of the ending.

WOW. I just want to gush about this book and author - I love everything she does. I could write an essay about this book but will try not to. It's taken me nearly a month to read but that's because I was savouring it. The endorsement about not wanting it to end is absolutely true. As ever, I feel emotionally bereft now it's finished and that I need a period of quiet reflection. The interlocking stories and the mystery of each was amazing. I know I'm going to keep thinking about this book for a long time, and playing with the narrative.

This is a complicated review - three separate stories. Each engaging in their own right but their connections to each other were difficult to find and the duplicate names of characters were often confusing. I truly enjoyed the writing and found it easy to pick up and become involved in it. I needed more closure for some parts but the overall message was good - the perils of always reaching to find paradise somewhere else.
