I admit, it started strong, when a man in search of the legendary creature goes to the southwestern desert to get firsthand folklore divulged to him by the natives and becomes infected by a virus himself.

However, in reading the Kindle version of this book I quickly realised there was going to be a problem.

This version is riddled with typos and misspellings which hindered my desire to get through this story at an enjoyable pace.

My reading experience and the quality of this story lost value because of something as solvable as formatting errors. So, a warning if you are considering the ebook version.

Having said that, it was an okay read. And by "okay" i mean, i didn't hate it, it was just okay. I was misled by the many affirming reviews claiming this book was scary.

I didn't love it and frankly am at a complete loss as to the many positive reviews this book has ever received since its publishing! I did not find it scary AT ALL!

It had potential beginning with the monster's origins after the infection possesses him, transforming him into the very thing that he was searching for, but then the rest of the story lost me between the formatting to digital errors and the bouts of boring dialogue in between the action and there was, in my opinion, barely any terror.

My summary -

PROS: When the savagery happens, it's well described and engaging, like when Meg Talley is trying to survive her encounter with the werewolf out in the middle of nowhere as she is trapped in her overturned and wrecked car, that was cool. I also enjoyed the autistic boy's character, thought he was really original and i felt for him.

CONS: Too, too long! Too many characters (did Meg really need to team up with three other main characters? a P.I. and a journalist and a horror writer are all too leading and too much to keep up with.), The story never did strike terror in me, I never really felt scared and think the story could have benefited from more distressing scenes as the one described above. Then there was that atrocious editing, oh man. The problems ranged from the benign typo to letters replaced with character symbols and other problems such as lots of "I's were "P's, and at one point Walter's name is spelled as Waiter. Yeah. I cannot be convinced that this story was ever proofread.

WHAT I LIKED BEST: No romance, just a werewolf story. This was the salvation.

Overall, if you're tired of wading through trashy girly love books tagged as "werewolf" with some half naked dude on the cover that makes you want to vomit because what you really want is a werewolf story with blood, rage and a ridiculous body count that includes a riotous fight for survival and you're desperate enough to not care about heinous editing, you may enjoy this lycanthropic yarn. (I would not recommend the e-version, however, and perhaps a well-edited version would've allowed me to enjoy it more.)
