Vampires - the Wild West - Hollywood - Blade. Skinner Sweet is an outlaw - an American Vampire with a bone to pick. After mistakenly being turned by some pompous rich European Vampires - he is left trapped in the dessert for years. When he finally get's freed he seeks vengeance and destruction. Fast forward to 1920s Los Angeles where an aspiring actress is about to have her life drastically altered by some goons and possibly the weird man who has been hanging around her pool. A bloody nightmare and a damned good read!
Pearl's story is awesome but ends a bit mehh and Skinner's story doesn't get good until the end. Will read second volume to see how it goes.

Just wasn’t the type of story I was expecting and it didn’t keep my attention.

It isn't often that I read the first in a series and know even before I've finished that I'm going to want to read the rest.
American Vampire was one of those. Now I just have to find the rest of them...

Good and grisly! Very good writing and graphics, set in the old west.
Absolutely loved the illustrations, very very intense! Vamps are actually scary looking creatures here! (so no, these vampires did not have glitter all over their bodies or recite beautiful poems to young high school girls... ehmmm) Gimme some candy! - Stephen King does not disappoint - Looking forward to Vol. 2
That was a really good start to a series! It was violent, bloody, and the vampires were done very well. Stephen King and Scott Snyder are a great team! I can't wait to read more.
Seems like everything comes down to vampires, but maybe I'm just down to the vampire part of my to-read list. Either way, this little story of the wild west and prohibition Hollywood has my attention. The premise here is that the first vampire sired in the U.S.A. is different. It's not known fully how or why by the European contingent, but it drives them nuts.
The obvious Old World/New World metaphors are right there. I don't know if those are the themes that will carry out, but it's a possibility.
The characters in the "modern" 20's Hollywood storyline are the more sympathetic protagonists, and I think this volume had noisy of shall we will get off the Wild West origin story. The last frames leave us with the seeds of vengeance and a story that may bring all our "heroes" back together.
If I were to compare this chapter of American Vampire to something it might be "The Godfather, " by Mario Puzo. The past and present sins informing one another and meeting in the New World, where the rules warp and change. American Vampire has potentially the same scope and complexity of character and had already surpassed the body count.
I look forward to reading more.

Ever wondered what a comic book vampire version of Josh Holloway would look like? Then look no further than volume one of 'American Vampire,' by Scott Snyder, Stephen King, and Rafael Albuquerque!
