Excellent follow-up to "Shanghai Girls!" I couldn't put the book down towards the end and held my breath waiting to find out the fates of Joy and Pearl. As always, the author did an incredible amount of research and presented a unique story. I always feel like I've learned something about China's history when I've read one of her books.

Wow! I like this one a lot better than the first book. I felt like the characters grew and changed. It also didn't seem like one tragedy after another happened in this one. I loved reading about the great leap forward and finally getting that happy ending.
Overall, I thought it was a great sequel to Shanghai Girls. It really brought me to China to experience the terrible things done to people in the name of progress. She is a good writer and I was glad to read a happy ending.
If this had been written by someone without the detailed knowledge Lisa See has developed through her research and heritage, I would not have been as engaged. The fact that it is historical fiction and set in a country that I know so little about, made it even more appealing than it would otherwise have been. It has a political undertone to it that may turn off some, but for my taste, it was perfect.
Vivid images from communist China, and a heartwarming story.
