Sequel to Shanghai Girls and I didn't like it as much but it was still a good read. I have to admit I knew the communism was "bad" but I really didn't know much about it so this book was eye opening. Parts of this book were heartbreaking; the suffering man inflicts on fellow man never ceases to amaze me.

I started this book immediately after finishing Shanghai Girls but it took me a long time to get into it enough to finish it. I think I had an overly dramatic feeling of doom for the characters going back to China and I was afraid of what would happen to them and in a way I didn't want to find out. Without spoiling it, of course bad things did happen but I enjoyed the ending and the journey through the book as well, once I got past my initial trepidation.

The story is very well written and researched and eye-opening but it is also pretty depressing. I did really like it and if you like these cultural type novels I would highly recommended it.
