Uplifting but in flashes shot through what is a sad story of continual abuse and neglect. Adunni is dedicated to getting an education and will stop at nothing, which makes her an admirable heroine for young readers. It's written in dialect, which I found a bit challenging BUT that is not meant as a criticism of the author or Daré's use of dialect; it made the story much richer.

A good book and story but it needs trigger warnings because I was really caught off guard by how traumatic some of the character experiences are.

The narrative voice is so authentic and unique that it's easy to connect to the character and the place. The misuse of English vocabulary leads to creative, evocative new combinations and creates new context for words which are consistently surprising.

This was a hard read for me because child marriages are pedophilia and this is something that I feel passionate about. Female children being forced into sexual slavery is something that people are not upset about enough.

How language and education does not determine her value or represent her drive is a powerful message that resonates throughout her many hardships.

I'm not sure if this one was for me. I think I prefer books that are a bit more subtextual rather than quite so direct like this one. While there were significant obstacles in Adunni's life, I felt that the outcomes could veer into the predictable. It was still super interesting to read a story set in a country that I don't normally read about, especially as Adunni was learning the "Nigeria facts" along the way with me.

A very impactful and inspirational story about Nigeria. The dialect threw me to start with but I thought overall it was beautiful.

What a brave, heartbreaking, and beautiful story. Adunni is such an inspiration. I'm so grateful that I don't have to face such challenges Adunni and thousands of other girls had to face just to get their education but I also hope and pray that this shouldn't be the case for any girl out there anymore.
