OOF this is some red-hot satire. Important and painful to read.

D.L. Hughley takes a satirical look at race relations in light of the overwhelming number of black individuals being killed by cops in recent years. If you notice the subtitle on the cover in red, it says "And Other Advice From White People," which gives you a hint at the content. After each of these shootings, the media is chock full of people, mainly white, saying what the deceased could have done differently to not be shot. Hughley highlights some of the most common and ridiculous advice, including comply (not too quickly, but not too slowly), don't wear hoodies, don't be black, but he boils it down to one thing - luck. While, yes, this book is highly satirical, it's a good book for all to read, including white folks, to understand how ridiculous our advice sounds, but also to really reflect on the commonality of the killings. How individuals followed all the instructions laid out to them, and were still murdered, yet most of the cops have gotten off on any charges. Things need to change.

How Not to Get Shot And Other Advice From White People by D.L. Hughley. Described as satire, but really just truth. Don't necessarily recommend to people already living this truth. Not because it's not good, it absolutely is, but because this book is comprehensive and detailed and nothing you don't already know. Do recommend to people trying to explain Black Lives Matter and these truths to people who don't understand.

Comedy with heartbreaking truth. I do not usually do comedy/humor in any format, live, TV, most movies and definitely not reading. However, this title was too intriguing and spot on my personal quest to learn more about racial issues (mostly African American) in our country from the beginning to yesterday.

I'm so glad I went for it. I was nearly in tears of irony. Is there such a thing? It was such a funny way to look at the issue and so painfully true that it did bring both sad and funny tears to my eyes.

It shouldn't be this way. It shouldn't be funny. African American people should not have to warn their kids or suggest they carpool with a white male because of no, you can't grab a white girl.

There are so many ways to face this issue and this was a breath of air and laughter in a subject that is so so wrong and heartbreaking.

Hilarious while also being incredibly poignant.

4.5⭐ hilarious and digestible satire. A good jumping-off point for people seeking to educate themselves on the black experience. Wish there were references for the studies and events mentioned though.

I don't know how to rate this.. everything was fine until he got to the tidbit about being lgtb... You do know that people can be black and gay right?

Overall I got the satire.

It's hard to make this material funny. It's a bitter pill to swallow. It's well-researched. You might think a little different the next time you hear the ice cream truck.
