I liked this one better than the first. I was really struggling to love Auren. Rip intrigued me from the get go and Midas has always given me the ick. I also found a lot of the reveals predictable in this book.

I had to keep reminding myself that Auren is responding to trauma and that’s why she makes what I would call dumb decisions. It made it difficult to get through sometimes. I want to root for Queen Malina but I am not rooting for her she’s almost as ugly as Midas. Midas not having any actual powers surprised me and Rip and Rot being the same person also surprised me

There was enough interesting things and surprises to keep me interested but I’m going to need Auren to step it up for me to love this series because at this time it’s a meh. I do like however how it shows someone breaking down and dismantling their beliefs and how difficult that can be.

I flew through this book, very readable and interesting! A little more cringe written than book 1 and auren was embarrassing regularly through this one but I still love her. Loved the twists and still enjoying the flashbacks. I don't care about the Queen storyline one jot but maybe that'll become more interesting. I'm definitely about to read book 3!
All in all an interesting romantasy in the same ilk as ACOTAR but not quite as good.

Don't get me wrong, I really enjoyed reading this! But at some point I looked down, saw that I was on page 370 and still — almost nothing had happened.

There's some character and relationship development and I did enjoy reading about the soldiers and their time at camp but really, all of that could've been shortened.

We do get loads of fun reveals at the end of the book though, one of them I really didn't expect. Will continue reading this series but really, don't expect too much plot from this installment (and I'm saying this as someone who's always characters > plot).
