Oh, how the mighty have fallen. Unfortunately, I think this book severely missed the mark.

I think that we needed to remove some of the repetitive scenes between the FMC and her MC. I am all for the “will they…won’t they” vibes in books and typically eat that shit up (the tension and yearning…yum) but it just didn’t work. It was essentially the same conversation with the same moves and outcome, and therefore, boring as fuck to read after the first time. If you are going to build the tension and therefore have the same outcome, you need to switch up something with the scene to make it worth it.

There is also so much happening with the other plot lines that this is taking up so much space that could be better utilized. A lot of plot lines plateaued, or were seeming forgotten for a bit until the end where there was a half assed attempt to close them out.

War is very hard to do in books and my hat is off to this author, but with it being such a large part, you really need for it to hit and it’s one of the weakest points unfortunately. More time should have been focused on fleshing it out and making the scenes we do see (cause you don’t need every detail on page, things happen off page, we get it) more impactful.
