The mutual pining was dragged for so long in the book, and it just left my expecting something to happen. It in ways gave me a satisfying ending but also hadn't.

This one hurts.

If you connect with any of the characters then you will probably enjoy this book more than I did. I found the relationship between Jon and Chloe unbelievable, their pining for each other was annoying and way too drawn out. The Lovecraft element to the story felt like a gimmick. It didn't actually add to or impact the story and the story would have been exactly the same without it so it felt really unnecessary. There were moments that I liked but towards the end when it became clear that there weren't going to be any answers I wondered what the point was. Nothing happened!

I want to preface this by saying: I wouldn’t really call this a thriller. If anything it’s more of a sci-fi. Do yourself a favor and DO NOT go into this expecting a thriller.

I’m really not sure how to feel or how to rate this book. On one hand I really enjoyed Caroline Kepnes’ writing, as usual. ‘You’ is one of my favorite books ever so it’s no surprise that her writing has drawn me in once again. However, I can’t help but also feel that this just fell a little flat for me.

I knew going into this not to expect something similar to ‘You’, but I was very excited to read it despite that. I tried my best to keep an open mind and take this novel for what it is, and unfortunately it’s a bit confusing, and unfinished feeling. There are a lot of questions that are never answered, and everything about the book still felt a bit unresolved at the end. I felt like this was a lot of pages spent pining, depressed, and expecting this big reunion and at least some sort of solution that never really came. I also felt that everything was a bit too convenient for the detective and for all of the characters when I think about it.

As I said, Caroline’s writing is beautiful, and for me that alone was worth the read, and I will continue to read any further novels she writes.

Really disappointed because I loved You and enjoyed Hidden Bodies but this was nothing like either of those books :(

Such a strong start then the story drags on and on before reaching a rather abrupt and unsatisfying end.

The ending here... Not your typical this happened and then that and everyone knows everything and can move on with their live.
I didn't really like You. This book is different. And so much better! Makes you guess and try to solve the mystery.
In mysteries a lot hungs on the ending. And to me the ending was not the best. Although it might have been the most realistic given the circumstances.

Told from three different perspectives, Caroline Kepnes'Providence is an unusual story that weaves together threads of obsession, mystery and H.P. Lovecraft.

Kepnes seems to specialize in unlikable narrators, yet somehow she still makes them accessible and engaging. You can't help but love them despite their flaws. Well . . .most of them.

Kepnes also does a great job keeping the reader immersed in the world of the story. I very nearly missed my subway stop on more than one occasion because I was so engrossed in the book, I didn't want to put it down.

In the end Providence leaves us asking the question, "Who are the monsters, really?"

Overall, I enjoyed this book immensely. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoyed her previous books, people who like super dark mysteries, fans of H.P. Lovecraft and weird fiction in general. I would not recommend this book to folks who can't deal with an unlikable narrator.

FULL DISCLOSURE: I was provided an ARC of this book from Lenny/Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
