A story from the demon point of view? Gimme!

What to Expect

A quick novella, highlighting a few episodes from over the "past" hundred years. These give glimpses to the war between humans and demons that serves as the basis for Barr's upcoming novel. The first half is told from the point of view of the demons, with gaps of a few years as the war unfolds. The second half is from the point of view of a witch - one of the few humans still aware that demons exist - as she learns the truth about the past.

What I liked

I loved the world-building, the quick jumps that let us understand both the magic system and the forces that shaped society.

What to be aware of

There is a romance sub-plot that felt a bit rushed (probably because this is a short novella), and I would have loved the demons to be a bit more 'alien' in mind than humans.

Felix's Review

Felix says don't believe anything a demon says, and don't be surprised what happens if you start summoning things from beyond.

Summary

A good introduction to Barr's writing, combining supernatural with hard-logic. Would appeal to anyone who enjoys hard magic system and interplanar (rather than biblical) demons.
