One of the most tragic stories in the AC universe is not to be found in any of the games, it is in this book. If you liked Haytham before reading this, you will love him after. It adds so much depths to the events of AC III.
Young Haytham, raised by a father who is rather quiet about his past, yet gives him a child hood like no other. Training every day for what he does not know, after all it is the only life he knows. Right until it is all taken away from him. His house burned, his sister kidnapped, and he inducted into a secret organisation his father may or may not have been a part of, or been the enemy of.
Truly fascinating story, finally we know why Haytham stayed a Templar, and how conflicted he truly was. Till I read this I never believed Haytham would let Connor kill him, but now I suspect that was indeed the case. This makes so much more sense of a what was originally a rather confusing character, and including the Connor's speech which was cut from the game was a very nice touch indeed.
All in all a great story, very well told, which adds a lot of worldbuilding to the AC universe. A must read for any AC fan.

“Compromise. That's what everyone has insisted on. And so I have learnt it. But differently than most, I think. I realize now that it will take time, that the road ahead is long and shrouded in darkness. It is a road which will not always take me where I wish to go - and I doubt I will live to see it end. But I will travel down it nonetheless."
"For at my side walks hope. In the face of all that insists I turn back, I carry on: this, this is my compromise.”
It’s your average book based on a video game, so it wasn’t super great or super terrible. But it was a fun read.

Man i LOVE AC3 but I feel ubisoft SCREWED this franchise over so much, and this book is evidence of that. How come every book since AC1 up to Revelation was about the main character of the VG, essentially retelling the game in book form, but whenever AC3 is mentioned everyones like OMG HAYTHAM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
NO.
I don't want to hear about Haytham, sorry. This is why this book was so disappointing for me. Plus I feel it paved the way to hyping up Black Flag with the mention of Edward, UGHHHHH. The style of writing also mischaracterised Haytham in a way that was too 'childish?' so I don't feel like it was really his story. It almost comes across as if you're meant to feel sorry for Haytham and his life when in reality... man he was a templar out of choice, he was ruthless, he wanted POWER and he killed people. He wasn't someone who wanted to run away into the american forest and live a pure life with Ziio, in fact I'm p sure Ziio didn't want that either. She was an ambiguous character who felt immense responsibility towards her people, and was ruthless in doing anything she could to help them. I did like Haythams response to meeting Connor, but again it was too.... nice?
This book was just a big no for me. It was disappointing because I was expecting Connor, just as Ezio and Altair got books, why doesn't Connor deserve one? Also if you're going to write a book about Haytham, at least do it right, bye.
