I really like the follow up, I'd expected more of a basic takeover from the old regime, have new adventures, but was pleasantly surprised to see the full ramifications of Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy carried out--the entire operation has, practically, to be rebuilt, and less trustworthy, less veteran members of the circus must be relied upon.

I think, however, le Carré started to get a bit long winded. Maybe most of the book contributed to the ended, but I couldn't help feeling that some concision would have helped push the reader into the story, and make them care more.

I totally forgot to write a review last night… Unfortunately I did not enjoy this as much as as Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy but let’s be real the bar was really high after that. Maybe my problems were due to me not being super familiar with East Asian history and politics but I had real problems trying to understand what was going on at times. The book also diverts from the main plot a lot (to me at least) and that made it extra confusing. Also, if it weren’t for the connection mentioned in the beginning, I never would have guessed that it exists in the bigger picture of the Karla trilogy.

I enjoyed the intrigue within the Circus and the whole business with the “cousins” though. The ending definitely leaves some space for speculation there and it makes me want to read the third book now.

A nice followup to Tinker, Tailor, but definitely a lesser book.

My main complaint is that the half of the book that dealt with the action (Westerby in southeast Asia) wasn't nearly as exciting as the more subtle scenes of Smiley in London. Smiley's really the gold here, but he's absent from too much of the book.

Still, a book that's not as good as Tinker, Tailer can still be a pretty good book. Can't wait to read the last one in the trilogy.
