Revamped take on Jane Eyre with a protagonist that exorcises houses of the Evil Eye. There was just enough Jane Eyre vibes to make you relate to the original, but enough original content that Blackwood nailed the perfect balance between old and new. The magic system was interesting, characters were compelling, and the story was paced just perfectly. It's no wonder this book became and instant best seller and a Reese's Book Club pick.

I won this book in a Goodreads Giveaway. I was intrigued to learn it was a retelling of Jane Eyre. I really enjoyed the story and it kept my interest. I was a little confused about what time period it was set in though. The story was pretty fast paced and spooky.
I’ve been trying and trying .. I just can’t get into this book. DNF at 38%. I have given it 4 days and it’s just so boring.

Necromancy with a heavy Christian influence? Interesting.
The execution of this book was okay. I found that the description of space and place were missing consistently. It was and then it was over.

This is definitely not a Jane Eyre retelling but it is a beautifully written gothic fairytale.
The writing is very strong, the characters are brilliant & the story really hooks you in. As for the Jane Eyre part the only thing is has in common with that is the name Rochester.
I can't wait to see what else Lauren Blackwood puts her in the future. This being a debut novel it's truly a success.

I really liked the initial setup, and the magic/cultural parts were very intriguing. But then the love interest arrived, and sadly I’ve given up tolerating the ‘misunderstood jackass’ trope, so I had to peace out. I saw no chemistry between the leads, the banter is poor (you want banter, try The Lion in Winter, or nearly any episode of Moonlighting), and even the narrator, who I’d liked, becomes less interesting. Life’s too short!
