The book seems a bit disjointed, maybe the translation to English is outdated. I didn't feel any connection to the characters until the final couple of chapters. Still a cool concept story wise, I just wish it had more depth.

I tried reading the book but it fell apart, fortunately it was available at my library on Libby, so I listened to the wonderful BBC Radio audio book.

Finished it and afterwards gave a try to Tarkovsky's adaptation just out of curiosity. My first book which was totally outshined by movie! However movie's a different beast in some sense; arguably more lyrical and focused.

Shockingly clear, crisp and emotional, considering Tarkovsky's film is ponderous and slow and esoteric, Lem's novel is a clear romantic drama. Long stretches of scientific claptrap did waste my time, but they standalone in certain chapters and could easily be ignored until the love story came back in.

A fantastic read. A truly great science fiction book that shows what first contact would, and hopefully might, look like.
