extremely graphic lovestory! not for the faint of heart. I did not love it, I felt it was tiring after a while. I did like how you follow the main character into his twisted mind, his obsession. but I did not really feel for him, I didn`t care for him. It was somewhat disturbing at times. The characters remained distant and unrelatable to me. But still: amazing writing. I felt like this book could have been even shorter.

I don't even know how to describe this book. The prose is absolutely stunning, incandescent... though, contrary to the back page's bold declaration, I would not call this a love story lmao

I would advise readers to research this book thoroughly and read the content warnings beforehand as many descriptions are quite graphic and uncomfortable to read.

The way Aciman writes really makes you feel all of the raw emotion of being 17 and experiencing your first real love again. There are moments when this book brought back memories and emotions that I had completely forgotten I had ever felt. It's a slow read and feels almost stream-of-consciousness in some areas, which is incredibly charming and oddly adds to the immersion.

I really wanted to like this, and I did at first. The writing is really beautiful and raw. However I couldn’t get past some of the content.

After the first part, and Elio actually makes a move, it gets uncomfortable. The 17 year old lusting after someone older feels ok, and somewhat relatable. The reverse however, felt predatory. I would have strongly preferred that the love/lust be one-sided.

Aside from the obvious age difference/power dynamics between the two leads, I also did not like the following:
A 16 year old girl also goes after Oliver, and while he did not reciprocate, he made no moves to discourage it.
The peach scene.
Oliver poops and Elio wants to look at it. Then he goes to poop without flushing, and Oliver rubs Elios stomach to help. I swear this actually happened in the book. That was the last straw.

This book has some really intense moments where the inner dialogue makes you question the sanity of Elio and his thoughts and character. I wasn't sure how I felt about the aggressive sexual language, the graphic thoughts, or the age gap between the two characters. But I gave the book some grace and continued, framing the uncomfortable intense moments as intrusive thoughts as the novel is told from the inner perspective of Elio. In the end I am happy I stuck it out the book developed into a beautiful love story that really pulled together in the last 100 pages, but forewarning the ending is gut wrenching.

i was confused and uncomfortable at some points. Like
fucking a peach i could still bear but then comparing it to a rape victim was just ugh and ofcourse the creepy underwear scene.
But the writing was amazing, everything was beautifully worded and some parts made me feel like i understood myself better. the characters were complicated as was the story and the ending left me feeling sorta empty but in a good way?
