Hopefully, I'll write a longer review later. I hugely enjoyed this book. It was like reading poetry.
This book is pure poetry.
Following the lives of six friends from childhood to old age, it is told by each friend in turn through their internal stream of conciousness. It's a difficult read: at times it's hard to keep track of the characters, and some events are only hinted at. The characters melt into each other like waves in the sea, and the narration emphasizes the nature of human experience and memory.
The book is written in beautiful, poetic language. Days and nights consist of moments that flow after one another and are filled with sensuous stimuli: details of nature, of people immersed in work, tactile sensations and relaxation after the day in an armchair by the fire or the pleasure of dinner with friends.
While the six friends stay in close contact throughout their life and live an outwardly contented life, the overall tone of the book is sad. People are lonely among each other and the struggle of life, while exhilarating at times, is futile.

Probably my least favorite Virgina Woolf book. Maybe I feel this way because I found it the most difficult to get through or because I read it towards the end of my Woolf seminar.
