Beautiful! When I first started reading I cried because of how beautiful this book is. Virginia introduced me to a new way of writing, monologue, stream of consciousness, sense-driven writing. It was beautiful, I related so much to Louis, how he feels about his father, how alienated he is because of his accent, his love for susan, the boasting boys. The envy the kids feel in kindergarten it’s the exact same I felt at that time. That book is truly me. It’s a grief, a response to death, the enemy the enemy of it all. Death the supreme art master

A book where every phrase is poetry.
I have never read a novel written so beautifully and complex. The narrative of the characters is unique set against a more or less simple coming of age plot.
My favourite character by far was Neville.
« For this moment, this one moment, we are together. I press you to me. Come, pain, feed on me. Bury your fangs in my flesh. Tear me asunder. I sob, I sob. »
The intensity of the emotions in this book…simply amazing. I want to learn how to use words like she does.

On the negative side, though, as someone who isn’t a native English speaker it was a rather difficult book to read at times. It demanded a lot of concentration and I don’t think I caught 100% of the whole connections and character development.

this is poetry

“I need silence, and to be alone and to go out, and to save one hour to consider what has happened to my world, what death has done to my world.”
