"The flower," said Bernard, "the red carnation that stood in the vase on the table of the restaurant when we dined together with Percival is become a six-sided flower; made of six lives."

The Waves is a very simple book - it is a collection of melodramatic monologues of a group of friends, from childhood to adulthood, that describe their experiences and the death of their friend.

It scarcely has a plot, and we barely get dialogue - the beauty of it lies within the thought-provoking sololiquys and the amazing descriptions of nature.

Sometimes when I was reading this I literally thought, "how the fuck did woolf ever think of this. this girl is crazy" - so yes it is that good.

A bit difficult to read and it did put me in a bit of a slump so personal rating is like 4⭐️. But objectively this is a masterpiece. 5⭐️

overall? 4.5⭐️

Holy fucking fuck. Ive been hit by the wave, trapped underneath its weight. That was completely unlike anything ive ever read before. So much of it went over my head but still managed to make me shiver and my heart ache. The ending in particular GOT me. The sense of immortality that exists in mundanity; its naturalness and pervasiveness. There’s so much to say and I dont have any of the words.

I cant rate this.

i think i need at least a couple of business days to fully grasp what i've just read. but it was incredible

“Alone, I often fall down into nothingness. I must push my foot stealthily lest I should fall off the edge of the world into nothingness. I have to bang my head against some hard door to call myself back to the body.”

“There was a star riding through clouds one night, & I said to the star, 'Consume me'.”

“For this moment, this one moment, we are together. I press you to me. Come, pain, feed on me. Bury your fangs in my flesh. Tear me asunder. I sob, I sob.”

I AM NOT OKAY. I have never read anything remotely close to The Waves. Every single word, every character will be held close to my heart forever.
