I liked the second book a bit better, as it was a bit more adventure-driven, but I really enjoyed the “two stories for the price of one” premise. We finally get to meet Sabatha!!! The ending, especially the epilogue, was so so so cool and I’m YEARNING for the fourth book, which may or may not ever get written, but I’m glad I read the first three regardless!!

The more I think about this one, the less I like it.
I mean, it's Scott Lynch. The dialogue, the prose, the wit, the charm of the characters are more or less still here, but there's a lot that's not.
There were no stakes, no peril whatsoever to the characters to make me care about the outcome of the events, the election plot can be summed up as 2 factions playing a child's game, the romance with Sabetha was way too drawn out and the 2nd half of the flashbacks with the theatrical play was as pointless as it gets.

This is interesting as I very much enjoy the world building and the Gentlemen Bastards confidence games but this one fell pretty flat for me. The whole book revolves around the approach of Sabbatha the girl we have only heard whispers about during the other two books. I like her character but I hate their relationship. Lock becomes useless anytime she is in site and just pines for her the whole book. They get a little better nearer the end of the book but as soon as I thought that we get this big reveal that I must be misunderstanding because it tore them apart but it seems very thin. Lock you are actually a mage that was practicing necromancy and installed his soul into a child’s body! Oh, am I a mage then? No. Do I have his memories and knowledge? No. Do I look like him? No. Do I have his personality? No. Are there any side effects of the magic? No. But! He did it to bring his red headed wife back to life so that’s why you love Sabbatha!!!! Insert more drama between the gang. I don’t really get it? Like even if it is entirely true it has no change yet it shattered their happy little reunion. Also Jean got no screen time this book because of this thing with lock and that is unacceptable. I hope when/if the fourth one comes out they get to play more confidence games and aren’t chasing Sabbatha or hiding.

Anything Lynch writes is entertaining and this is no different. Adding a new relationship into Locke’s life makes him much more multidimensional, and his story with Sabetha is interesting. However, it feels like Lynch starts to lose his grip on the scope of the story. Locke’s adventures were more fun when they were tightly contained crime capers, and the additional fantasy and political elements are starting to become more confusing than interesting. Ultimately, I think that is why there has not been a fourth book. 3.75/5

Not sure how I feel about the direction the series takes in this book. Still enjoyed the world created by Scott Lynch and look forward to his next book even if it becomes the last book I read in this series.
