Old Stone Mansion by Mahesh Elkunchwar
Originally published in 1989 in Maratji, a book well ahead of its time. A crumbing old mansion- Wada Chirebandi.
This book is an underrated gem, a diamond in the rough. The family head patriarch passes away unleashing the dogs of war. This book almost reminded me of the movie, Ram Prasad ki Tehrvi. Do give it a watch.
The dogs of war are siblings torn apart by the mountain of responsibilities, filial pride and forgotten dreams. The riches left may be meagre, but the division is always hard.
Who is the first to give up their portion?
Dilapidated mansion hanging with bricks and mortar, an old tractor- a symbol of wealth rusts at the gate of the house wounding those who dare to return.
Dadi hears none, laments all day, onlookers look?

A chest of jewelry awaits those who wins..But you ask why family heritage is important, chains of shining gold worn by forefathers who you feel are guiding you , teaching you . The pearls and gems passed through many hands and adored by all.. There is only glamor and reputation in this golden heaven..Debts and promises vanish..

The right deed is never done. Amma becomes Dadi in the dark .. both mere shadows morphing into one.Dreams lay forgotten and bellies are filled. Cities to cities and villages to villages people return and life goes on with skeletons turning into dust. A quote comes to mind-"We only see each other at Weddings and Funerals''.

Looking forward to read the other two parts- The Pond and Apocalypse
