This was a fun read! I loved all the recipes that were in the book. Rose was such a great character and I loved that she was willing to help anybody even in the competition!

This was a predictable, but cute graphic novel! Loved the dessert recipes that were spread out between the chapters :)

I’ve been loving graphic novels about food, cooking, and competition shows and this one was a combination of all of these things and was so much fun! I loved the art style and our main characters and I felt like the visuals immersed me into the show well as an audience member.

'Batter Royale' by Leisl Adams is a graphic novel about a crazy baking competition.

Rose and her best friend Fred get invited to a cooking competition because of a dessert Rose makes at the diner Fred's mother owns. It is a good chance for Rose to earn the money to go to culinary school. For Fred, it's a chance to help save the family business. It won't be easy with the twists and turns the competition takes and the cutthroat competition.

I liked this fun, somewhat romantic story of two friends who might end up becoming more. The art works really well and has a really nice animated quality to it.

It's a entertaining, quick read that's ideal for baking competition enthusiasts but it is written for a younger audience so elements are a bit trope-y or un-realistic. I personally didn't mind because I thought it was fun and a little tongue in cheek with the challenges. The only complaints I have are
Fred having a cold for a couple of scenes and the showrunner sabotaging 2 of the 3 teams near the end. The first was just gross and unnecessary as no one wants to see someone sick handling food and it doesn't really affect the story. You could literally take out those two pages and the few sick illustrations and nothing would change.

As for showrunner sabotage, I thought it was going to be 'reality tv storytelling' where the showrunners set up Nicole to be a more obvious villain for ratings but instead it was to see how the other teams manage and teach Nicole a lesson? But one team gets completely screwed over & eliminated in the process? The other over the top elements felt like fun embellishments but the strange sabotage just didn't make sense from a story telling point of view.

That said, I still enjoyed it and I thought the friends to romance storyline was cute.
